1. Purpose and Scope

The Aviary is a multinational, age-verified, creator-positive community for fandom writers, artists, and creators of transformative works. These policies apply to all Aviary spaces, including sister servers, event servers, collaborative channels, and shared community resources.All members are expected to read, understand, and follow these policies. Failure to comply may result in warnings, removal from spaces, or permanent bans.

2. Respect & Conduct

Treat all members with courtesy and consideration.
Engage respectfully, even during disagreements.
Assume good faith unless proven otherwise.
Maintain a creator-positive, anti-harassment environment.

Doxxing or sharing private information that is not your own.

3. Age Verification & Adult Spaces

3.1 Age Verification

The Aviary is an 18+ community.
All members must complete age verification before accessing the server.
We offer multiple verification methods, including GDRP/CCPA-compliant tools and human options designed to protect member privacy.

Subject to change when Discord provides it's own age-assurance.

3.2 NSFW Content

Keep NSFW discussions in designated NSFW spaces.
Discord's TOS and user policies apply at all times.
Absolutely no minors may participate in any Aviary space, event, or collaboration.

4. Fandom & Creator-Positive Environment

4.1 Don't Like, Don't Look

Members are responsible for curating their own experience.
Do not shame, censor, or moralize about fictional content.

4.2 Taggin & Boundaries

When tagging other users, do so responsibly and courteously.
Respect opt-in and opt-out spaces.
Do not force others to engage with content they avoid by rightfully checking their tag.

5. Anti-AI Policy

AI is not a monolith, so it is important we draw the lines on what is considered acceptable and unacceptable within this server ecosystem.
Analytical tools, accessibility tools, etc, are permitted.
GPTs and generative "AI" tools are not permitted in Aviary or it's sister servers.

5.1 Prohibited AI Use

AI-generated writing, art, or media.
AI-generated characters, worlds, or assets.
AI rewriting, summarizing, or "polishing" member work.
AI-generated emotes, stickers, or server assets.
AI-checkers.

AI may NOT be used for creative output.

5.2 Permitted AI Use

Voice chat transcription.
Accessibility TTS/Screenreaders.
Language translators.
Non-generative spell/grammar checkers.

AI MAY be used for ease-of-use and accessibility purposes.

6. Content Boundaries & Spoilers

Don't be a dick.
Use Discord's spoiler function.
For text, use markdown pipes: ||text to be spoiled goes here||
For images, you will need to select "Mark as Spoiler" before sending the message.

Major reveals.
Sensitive/Triggering content.

When in doubt, spoiler it.

6.2 Multi-Fandom Considerations

The Aviary is multi-fandom.
Respect that not everyone is familiar with the same media.

7. Collaboration Etiquette

Credit collaborators clearly.
Communicate expectations before starting a project.
Do not ghost ongoing collaborators without notice.
Respect deadlines for events and exchanges.

8. Event Participation

Follow event-specific guidelines and deadlines.
Do not plagiarize or recycle old works for new events.
If you must drop, notify the staff/event coordinator early so your partner is not stranded.

9. Emotional Labor

Trauma dumping, venting, political discourse, and emotionally intense conversation belong in their respective channel in the Heavy Topics section.
Respect people's bandwidth.
The Aviary is a community, not a crisis center.
We are not a replacement for therapy or real-world support.

10. Creative Respect

10.1 Plagiarism & Art Theft

Plagiarism and art theft are not tolerated.
Attempting to pass off someone else's creative work as your own is prohibited.
Reuploading paid or custom emotes/stickers is grounds for removal.

10.2 Content Navigation

We use symbols to denote channel themes.
Members are responsible for their own wellbeing.

10.3 Fandom Organization

Channels for fandom discussion, characters, and ships are created on request.
Characters and ship channels are categorized to support Don't Like, Don't Look.
Discourse belongs in the designated Fandom Discussion section.

11. Privacy & Safety

Do not share private member information.
Pseudonyms are welcome; real names are optional.

12. Staff Interaction

Staff are volunteers here to support the community.
Follow staff direction during conflicts or safety issues.
If you disagree with a decision, appeal it respectfully.
Staff are not moderators of personal disputes outside Aviary spaces.

This is a fast-track to being permanently banned from Aviary and its sister servers.

13.2 Unbanning Policy

If the user is banned but not on the permabanned list, their ban may be appealed at their request after at least 30 days have passed.
Unbanning is handled by a committee composed of those most affected by the banned user.
The committee must be unanimous to approve an unban.
Should the committee uphold the ban in question, it does not immediately escalate to a permanent ban, but it is advised you wait at least 60 days before trying again.

14. Reporting

If you see something unsafe or against the rules, please notify staff either via ticket or dm.
We want The Aviary to remain a welcoming, creator-positive space.

Collaboration & Connection

At The Aviary, we believe creation shouldn't have to be a solo journey unless you want it to be. Whenever you need a fresh set of eyes on a chapter, an artist to commission artwork, or a co-author to help bring a sprawling AU to life, our community functions as a hub to connect.

Collaborative Hubs

These are dedicated channels where you can pitch project ideas, request beta readers, or connect with others to help ideas germinate.

Creator Spaces

Individual creators can opt to have their own dedicated craft channels. These are spaces where the assigned creator has extended permissions to self-moderate their own little space. People can drop in and show support or hype for their friends or content they enjoy.

Leveling is enabled on the server but restricted to a single channel, and tagging is OFF.

Attribution & Credit

Alpha Reader? Beta Reader? Editor? Pinch Hitter? What do all these words mean?

As the server has grown, we thought it might be helpful to outline the various roles a collaborator can take. The Beta Reader and Art Redliner roles are ping roles anyone can assign themselves if they wish to assist. Firmly stating what kind of work you're looking to do will be helpful for creators to help manage their expectations! Everyone has a different style, so use this guide to help you determine what role you're looking to fill and for suggested attribution practices.
These are example guidelines, not actual rules. You will want to discuss expectations with collaborators upfront and determine what works best for your project.

Primary Roles

🧪 Alpha Reader

This is the first set of eyes on a manuscript, and fellow writers and creative peers often perform this role, but not always! A good way to think of them is the story’s first structural and emotional review.
    When: Early drafts before polish
    Feedback Areas: Premise, pacing, character psychology, emotional tone
    Will Flag: Plot holes, thematic dissonance, and inconsistencies (especially in character behavior)
Credited Via: Acknowledgement note at the beginning or end of the fic

📚 Beta Reader

Typically these represent the target audience and may or may not be fellow creators or even in the same fandom. Think of them as a test audience.
    When: Midway, polished but not finished manuscript
    Feedback Areas: Entertainment value, emotional impact, clarity of writing
    Will Flag: Confusing plots, characters that are flat or not yet realized, pacing issues

📝 Editor

These are the craft surgeons! But there are different types of editors! You can specify if you're only looking to do certain types of editing, but you can also just note editor and come what may.
    Developmental Editor: Helps shape arcs, growth, plot, and cohesion
    Line Editor: Refines sentence flow, rhythm, and emotional cadence, making sure things have enough room to breathe.
    Copy Editor: Grammar, punctuation, and consistency
    Proofreader: The final boss, catching typos before publishing

🧤 Pinch Hitter

A creator who can step in and help fulfill a fanwork or request, often seen in events or exchanges but I personally have fulfilled this role for friends who have struggled to finish chapters/stories/etc.
These are creators, and will step in to complete the work. There are also subtypes.
    Initial Pinch Hit (IPH): Steps in to fulfill something from the beginning
    Emergency Pinch Hit (EPH): Steps in to fulfill something when something is missing or violates a DNW
    Pinch Hit of the Apocalypse (PHOTA): A ultra last-minute, high-stakes rescue mission
    Fic Surgeon: Called in to help fix and write sections and unblock or otherwise save the work from the trash bin.

🎨 Illustrator

Someone who creates visual companion artwork for an author's work! There are two ways to credit this person:
    Illustrator: Noted in fic summary. Use this when the art is inspired by but not co-developed
    Co-creator: Special Ao3 assignment. Use this when you're developing the fic and art together, the artwork is integral to the story and not just an interpretation, or you both feel a sense of co-ownership

🪞 Sensitivity Reader

    Feedback Areas: marginalized characters, trauma, or lived experiences.
    Will Flag: disrespect that is not necessary for the narrative, harmful tropes or stereotypes

🧠 Canon Consultant

    Feedback Areas: deviation from source material and characterization, particularly useful in AUs
    Will Flag: Lore inaccuracy, out-of-character behavior, and continuity

    Feedback Areas: Timeline, arcs, motifs, and emotional themes, often across series with multiple titles or long fics or pieces with multiple points of view

🗣️ Dialogue Polisher

    Feedback Areas: voice, rhythm, subtext, and emotional cadence of character speech

🏷️Tag Curator

    Feedback Areas: Helps select tags within the limit for thematic, emotional, character, and trope coverage as well as content warnings.

🫧 Vibe Ghost

Sip and scroll reader that haunts Discord with emoji trails.
    Feedback Area: Doesn't analyze, just feels

💤 Team No Sleep

Whether you’re pulling an all-nighter for a deadline, a new parent, or have a brain that refuses bedtime, lack of sleep, medication, and other situations can appear in your writing. These are the decoders, the decrypted; the ones that can translate your jumbled thoughts into coherent language.

🏁 Sprint Partners

Writes alongside you in real-time during a sprint, providing hype and feedback in the form of live reactions.

Don't Like, Don't Look

We trust our members as adults to curate their own experience using Discord’s role and channel filters. You are in control of what content you engage with. From Opt-In fandom channels to Opt-Out creator channels with content symbology, we do all that we can to empower you to exist by this code in the community.
Mistakes do happen; things end up in the wrong channel, and we give grace for those incidents and try to gently redirect to the appropriate server structure.

Pro-Fic, Pro-Ship, Anti-Censorship

We support creative freedom across all fandoms and ships without moralizing or policing fictional content.
However. We must adhere to the Discord TOS, which may change at any time. It is up to users to keep up to date and ensure they are following the community guidelines on content sharing in-server.

Strictly Anti-AI Fanworks

AI is not a monolith, but Generative AI tools have no place in our creative output. The Aviary is a 100% human-created space designed to protect and celebrate genuine artistic effort.

Respecting Bandwidth

We value mental wellbeing. Emotionally heavy topics, venting, and intense discussions have designated spaces so everyone can manage their social energy accordingly.
We do not apologize for having lives outside of Discord. If life calls you away for a break, you are not required to inform staff, though we do always appreciate it. No apologies are necessary for being busy with real-life things or needing time away.

Respect of Livelihood

We have paid artists for emotes and stickers, rather than using bots or screenshots.
We do not ask artists for anything for free in our server, though several have chosen to offer the server exclusive discounts or provide gifts or artifacts. These are done in good faith and credited appropriately

Core Server Architecture

We know massive servers can get overwhelming fast. The Aviary is structured intentionally to keep visual clutter to a minimum while ensuring you can find our niche and live by the "Don't Like, Don't Look" philosophy.

Forum-Based Organization:

Topics, such as fandoms, creative discussions, heavy topics, ship channels, etc use Discord Forums to keep the channels list clean and easy to follow. Forums have an Opt-In requirement, meaning you will not be pinged when new posts go into specific Forum Threads unless you deliberately follow that thread. Additionally, Discord does auto-hide these Threads, so we have pinned a Directory Thread to every Forum.

Ping Roles

Self-assigned roles let you toggle specific server notifications, such as event spaces, ON or OFF.

Channel Symbols

Intuitive channel symbols can help you scan for what you need. If you see a dove symbol on a creator's channel, enter at your own risk. See an 18+ on a channel marked mature? You have been warned. See a safety vest? It's SFW and tame.

Sister Servers

Connected hubs for specialized projects or specific sub-communities.    The Flock: A very quiet, very rarely active sister server specifically for beta-reading, writing, and collaboration with per-creator categories with more organizational freedom. This server is open to application by all Aviary members.    The Rookery: Once upon a time, The Aviary allowed C.AI bot makers to have a creative space in-server. The community shifted and voted to remove these from the core creative space. While staff takes an anti-gen-ai stance, it was voted to create a separate server with clear expectations. This server is invite-only, and the expectation that RP chats are not a replacement for creativity or a shortcut to writing is set.

Safety & Trust

Your safety, privacy, and peace of mind are a priority. We maintain active, transparent moderation to keep The Aviary a healthy space for everyone.

18+ Age Verification

All members complete a privacy-focused age-verification process before entering to ensure our space remains strictly adult-only. This helps keep minors safe, but also provides adults with safety from minors. We offer multiple options, including GDPR/CCPA-compliant tools and manual checks.

This is expected to be retired when Discord rolls out Age Assurance

Private Ticket & Dispute

Have a conflict, safety concern, question, suggestion, or want to request a creator channel? Open a private ticket with staff at any time for prompt, confidential support. These tickets open a private Thread with you and staff that other server members can't see.
Concern with Moderation? Reach out to the server owner.

Transparent Moderation

We moderate based on clear, posted rules, not personal whims.

Audit Logs

Server logs are maintained for accountability during disputes, ensuring fair and objective resolution. Only the server owner has access to the full logging system. If you accidentally shared PII you did not mean to share, let the server owner know, and it will be removed from the database. We have no interest in maintaining your personal data.

Staff Role & Limits

Staff are volunteer facilitators here to enforce server guidelines and keep the space safe. They are people who want to vibe in a chill fandom community. Staff do not moderate private DMs or personal disputes outside of Aviary-controlled spaces unless they are directly breaking our rules, such as the No Sharing rule, and may pre-emptively ban users who are reported for behavior that would harm our ecosystem. It is not a moral judgment, but we read the warning labels and do not invite chaos.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does age verification work?

We offer multiple privacy-conscious options, including GDPR/CCPA-compliant bots and manual human checks, so you never have to sacrifice personal privacy to join.
The bots provide no more information than is normally received in an age assurance handshake (DOB and Expiry).
Human verification can be done by photo with PII blocked or hidden; you will need to get your secret word, which changes daily, from the member of Staff that is handling your application. That secret word will need to be written down by hand on a piece of paper with the day’s date.
Manual verification can also be done by video and requires you to hold your ID up to the camera long enough for us to validate the birthdate and expiry; you can hide PII with electrical tape.
Lastly, we do allow for other definite proof of age of majority, such as a tattoo with the secret word and date handwritten combo.

Why don’t you mark the community as Age-Restricted?

Marking the entire server as “Age-Restricted” actually limits access. Yes, this means minors can’t access the server, which is good, but we have several members who are iOS-only.
Due to Item 1 of the Apple Developer Agreement, which strictly prohibits Mature content on the App Store, Discord requires iOS users to log in to Discord Web to toggle a bypass function. However, if you are iOS-only, this can naturally be a problem.

Can I share work for dark, niche, or taboo ships?

Yes. As long as content is appropriately tagged and kept in appropriate spaces, we expect members to abide by “don’t like, don’t look.”
Just abide by the Discord TOS.

What happens if I have to drop out of a community project or event?

Real life comes first! We just ask that you notify an event coordinator as early as humanly possible so assignments can be adjusted or a pinch hitter can be found.

Are AI tools allowed if I only use them to brainstorm?

No. To protect the integrity of human creativity, generative AI Tools (GPTs, AI Image Generators, Prose Polishers, AI Checkers, etc.) are strictly prohibited for any creative output, drafting, or brainstorming.What is allowed? Non-generative, analytical, or accessibility tools, such as basic spellcheckers, non-generative Grammarly configurations, screen readers, translation tools, or data-clustering scripts that organize human-written notes without generating text.There is a strict line between tools that support humans and tools that generate content.
The Aviary is 100% human-created.

Near-nightly, low-pressure co-working sessions hosted in a dedicated pinned text channel. Hop in, set a timer, write or draw alongside fellow members, and celebrate your word counts or WIP progress together.

📖 Weekly Storytime

Pull up a seat and read out: your fic, another server member's fic, a random fic, a published work. This is about celebrating the written word. Reading is not required—if you’re not comfortable reading in VC, you’re more than welcome to hang out and listen in.

🎁 Exchanges & Secret Santas

Seasonal gift exchanges. We will work to ensure you are not stranded without a fanwork if your original partner has to step back.

🎉 Monthly Giveaways

Once a month, we vote on the Giveaway item or service; this can be a fic or art piece someone makes for the winner, convention grabs, random trinkets, or care packages. Event Guidelines & Expectations

Real Life First

If you sign up for an event and realize you cannot finish, just let the event coordinator know as early as possible. No shame, no guilt. Pinch Hitters exist specifically to step in so everyone gets taken care of.

No Recycling

Event submissions should be newly created for the prompt (reviving and finishing a WIP counts), unless the specific event explicitly allows submitting an existing work.

Respecting Deadlines

Event timelines are posted in advance, or a “late submission” option is provided. If you need an extension, let the event coordinator know before the deadline passes.
